UPCOUNTRY

Along the green slopes of Haleakala are the small towns of Upcountry Maui. This rural setting is ideal for those that want something different - cattle ranches, cowboys on horseback and cool mountain slopes. The backdrop to it all: magnificent Haleakala ("House of the Sun"). This 10,023 foot volcano is not extinct, but only dormant, with its last eruption being less than 200 years ago.

This residential town of Pukalani is a brief ten minutes from the coast and most properties have wonderful views. Kula is further up the hill, and here you'll find the land covered with acres of produce and flowers. Makawao is the old "paniolo" (or cowboy) town with quaint shops and restaurants and is located approximately seven miles above Paia. Slightly further to the east is Haiku, the most lush of the upcountry areas and the closest to Hookipa. The upcountry options are varied and exciting... a great choice when you want to get away from it all!

AN EXAMPLE:
The "Chicken Coop" in Haiku is one of our favorites. The owner is an artist, and this is certainly reflected in the decorating. White tile floors with accent rugs of teal and purple, an antique armoir for the entertainment center (complete with the classic video library), white kitchen, white bathroom, lovely tropical yard, tiled outdoor shower, large private hot-tub, outdoor eating area with gas BBQ etc, etc, etc!! I'd move in if I could!!

UPCOUNTRY is not for everyone, but delightful for those that do not feel a need to be on the edge of the beach. If this seems perfect for you, let us know! We'd be happy to email back quotes and descriptions of properties suited to your special situation!
