"The Hunt"

"The original painting of this ancient spearfisherman was a commission that holds the record for taking the longest - over 3 years, although the concept was one I have fancied for many years.  Spearfishing is my passion, and I had long awaited the opportunity to  paint this piece.  'The Hunt' has been described as the most endemically accurate underwater Hawaiian painting, as the creature and coral species show an accurate representation of what you find underwater around my home.  While the internet does not do justice to the colors, look closely and you'll find:  pink kumu heading into the protection of the reef, yellowfin ahi being corralled into the reef by a sailfish, a 7-11 crab eating coral, an ancient diver with an ohia spear and tortoise-shell goggles, a white-tip reef shark being tended by a Hawaiian cleaner wrasse, a Hawaiian green sea turtle launching skyward from its resting place, a grouper and a zebra moray both dreaming of an eight-tentacled meal, a pair of ono heading away from the action, and much much more.  You'll find something new every time you view this work.  Doing the research for this piece was quite an adventure.  My brother Tim and I took my sea kayak out of La Perouse into the heavy seas beyond and were flipped by huge waves several times.  Finally we got to an area of relative calm where I could dive down and really take note of the coral, fish and invertebrate species and  their populations on the deep reef.  I found that painting each new creature required another foray into the sea.  Hundreds of people have stopped by to watch work progress on this piece, and their energy, along with mine, gives this work a life of its own."
