Sound the luthier is seeking:

I seek a strong, clear sound, well balanced across the registers (bass, mid, and treble). The sound from different sound boards varies from brilliant to darker but it is usually on the bright side, especially when new.

Preferred sound wood:

Spruce and cedar. I use cedar, Englemann and Sitka spruce.

Optional available sound woods:

I use tone wood from the US northwest. I live here! They all give a wonderful sound and one must learn how to work them to "unlock" their sound.

Preferred back/side wood:

Indian Rosewood

Optional available back/side woods:

I regularly use some beautiful Indian Rosewood. I have Brazilian but don't talk it up. I also will build with Cocobolo, Ziricote and other hardwoods if requested.

Preferred scale length:

64 cm and 65 cm

Optional available lengths:

My guitar is 65 cm, but I do build some 64 for small hands. Not many longer scales but it depends on the hands that are playing.

Neck width (at nut):

2-1/8 inches

Optional available neck widths (at nut):

This can also change with the fingers that are playing--if big fingers need more room, fine.

Thickness of neck (at first fret):

7/8 inch

Optional available neck thickness (at first fret):

Variable

Other available options:

Many options available but I can't change my bracing concepts of the box on a client's whim. Pick-ups are slowly improving. Cut-away is possible at extra cost.

Other comments:

A full, powerful, clear sound, with good playability and reponse are what I strive for. The sound should be there without hammering on the strings, but when you do there should be a "pop!" response. The sound shouldn't splat, breakup, or distort. I understand that clients have different needs and wants, physically and musically, and I am more than willing to listen and work with them. I will also be quite frank and honest in my response to them.
