BREACH
In this spectacular display, the whale leaps out of the water, usually clearing two-thirds of its body, twists in mid-air and plunges into the water, usually landing on its back. A thunderous splash attracts even the casual whale watcher. In this rare photo taken from our boat, the whole whale is seen! It is thought that this behavior may be a communication signal to other whales; it may be a way to rid the whale of itchy barnacles; or perhaps the whale is just having fun.
