Closing the Maui Recycling Loop
Thanks to the enthusiasm, energy and commitment of the citizens and businesses of Maui nearly 34% of Maui's "waste stream" is now diverted from disposal in Maui's landfills.

From paper to plastic, from glass to grass, over 66% of these diverted  materials  are now used to manufacture new, value-added products for sale here on Maui and throughout the world.

MAUI RECYCLING GROUP AND REMADE ON MAUI
CLOSING THE MAUI RECYCLING LOOP

MRG has always supported the concept of purchasing recycled content goods to close the recycling loop.  If recyclable materials are not re-processed from the waste stream to the manufacturing stream then recycling programs are not truly productive.  However, when the loop is closed, landfill diversion becomes only one of the benefits.  Businesses that utilize recycled feedstock to create value-added products are on the cutting-edge of  economic development and diversification, job creation,  global export of environmentally appropriate technology, environmental protection and community service.

Here on Maui we currently recycle around 30%, or 60,000 tons of our waste stream.  Of that 60,000 tons about 36,000 tons, or 60%, is utilized to create a variety of  value-added products on Maui.  Our recycled plastic is made in to outdoor furniture, plastic lumber and other products.  Our green waste, biosolids, and other organics are processed into compost.  Used cooking oil from restaurants becomes diesel fuel.  Glass is ground and used in water filtration systems, on roadways and for decorative uses.  Metals are sold as commodities.   Paper is also sold as a commodity, re-processed for packaging,  and used to manufacture paper pottery.  In some cases these products are marketed to export as well as local markets, in some the technology developed here is also being exported.

Taken together these recycling entrepreneurs employ over 50 Mauians, many in highly-skilled, and highly paid, professional and technical positions.  Their wages and company revenues inject money into Maui's economy and contribute their fair share of County taxes.

These recycling entrepreneurs are literally remaking Maui.  That's why MRG, with funding from the County of Maui and the State of Hawaii, is leading the way in educating Mauians and others about our Island's REMADE ON MAUI merchants.  They are helping us all close the recycling loop on Maui and worldwide.  Look for the REMADE ON MAUI logo in Maui publications in 1998 and buy REMADE ON MAUI!
