| ![]() ![]() Maui's Best Kept Secret In the early days of our Society, Book Fair Days, held in various shopping centers, were the only way to dispose of surplus books. Around 1984, the MFOL opened their first year-round location on Waiehu Beach Road, subsequently moving to the present location in Puunene approximately ten years ago. The old building is part of the Puunene School, which ceased operating as a school many years ago. Staffed exclusively by volunteers, who are knowledgeable and accommodating to say the least, this is surely "bargain city," with hardbacks, paperbacks, and magazines. The suggested donation is ten cents each (a few select books may have a higher suggested donation amount). Our qualified estimate is in excess of 180,000 books to choose from! A visit to the Used Book is always worthwhile, and we're very easy to find. From Kihei (Mokulele Highway), make a right turn onto Hansen Road at the light, and then another right at the stop sign onto South Puunene Avenue. ![]() Drive past the HC&S Sugar Mill untill you see this sign: ![]() then turn left onto East Camp 5 Road. Drive by the Puunene School (on your right), look for the next sign: ![]() then turn right and follow the road until it ends at our store. ![]() From Kahului, take the new highway towards Kihei and turn left at the first stop light onto Hansen Road. Make a right at the stop sign onto South Puunene Avenue and drive past the HC&S Sugar Mill and then follow the previous directions above. We're open Tuesday through Saturday, from 9am to 4pm, and we only accept payment in cash. Bring a cardboard box and load up! Have you been searching for Hawaiiana? Does your child have to write a report on whales? Are you an orchid fancier? A cat lover? Are you planning a trip to Japan? Alaska? Australia? The Used Book has a resource you may not have thought of -- back issues of the National Geographic magazine. We have thousands of copies. We also have an index, so you don't have to search through thousands of issues to find what you're looking for. The key MFOL volunteers that donate their time here deserve more than our thanks. Mahalo to Joyce, Jeanne, John, Ed, Sharon, Harriette, Carol, T-Lay, and Thelma! Would you like to volunteer some time at our location? If yes, please call us at (808) 871-6563 during open hours. We would most certainly welcome your help! |
