Bem Vindo! Welcome to...

The Medeiros Web

Aloha from the home office in Kihei, Maui...

This is the Medeiros Web. The concept is quite simple, this is a web page for and about people named Medeiros. There are over 100 people in 70 or so listings which are arranged by general areas (Academia, Arts and Entertainment, Sports and Recreation, Business and Public Sector, Special Folks, and Families from Maui).

If you have any suggestions, or if your name is (or was) Medeiros and you want to be listed, feel free to fire off some e-mail to me at makule@maui.net.

I'm Back!

Well, this has been a hectic year. But I'm back and hopefully things will settle down over the next month or so. My apologies to all the folks who have e-mailed. I was saving all the e-mail for inclusion here, but hard disk problems have wiped out pretty much everything. Luckily, some the most recent stuff was still on my ISP's server, and I intend to get replies out to these folks. For everyone else, I'm sorry but I have lost your information and I hope that you will forgive my lack of organization and failure to follow the first rule of system administration (Always back up your data!). Please re-send your info and I will make sure I save it to diskette.

Also, if any of you have an old link or bookmark (more than a year old) please be advised that my Maui.Com account has been closed and that I have removed the web pointer from that site (e-mail from the old account will continue to be forwarded).

And as ever, thanks to all of you who have become a part of the Medeiros Web. It's you that make this site interesting.

A Note About the Medeiros Web's Logo

Special thanks to Anthony at Emblazon Multimedia who created the Medeiros Web's graphic which highlights the global nature of our cyber-family and uses elements from John's rendering of the Medeiros coat of arms. I will be including this graphic on all the pages that fall under the general umbrella of the Medeiros Web.

Medeiros Heraldry and Geneaology:

Coat of Arms Here's the coat of arms for the Medeiros family that was researched and created by John Medeiros. A big MUITO OBRIGADO to John for providing it for use on the Medeiros Web.

Decio Martins de Medeiros has information on the origin of the Medeiros surname. If you are interested, the information is available (in Portuguese) on Decio's webpage under the heading Nome Medeiros. An English translation is included on the Medeiros Web's new History and Genealogy Page.

For general information on Portuguese History and Geneaology, check out the Medeiros Web's Portuguese Web Resources page.

Searching for Someone Named Medeiros?

If you are searching for an e-mail address for someone named Medeiros, try the University of California at Riverside's Okra Search Engine.

If you are searching the web, I would recommend you go to CNET's Search.Com. They have all the links to Yahoo, Lycos, and AltaVista. For a comprehensive search, try out the Metacrawler search engine.

If you are searching for Portuguese web sites and can speak a least a little Portuguese, you should try the Servidor de Apontadores Portugueses (SAPO). This is an excellent web site with a format similar to that of Yahoo.

Special thanks to Martin Bruckman at the University of Aveiro for his help in getting the Medeiros Home Page listed on SAPO.

  • Hugo Medeiros mentions that while he was raised in Portugal, his family is originally from Sao Miguel in the Azores.

  • James Medeiros, Jr. lives in New York City and works in investment banking (with BlackRock Financial Management). He asks why sometimes there is a "de" before Medeiros; does "de" signify nobility in Portugal, or is it a prefix that was simply dropped?

In response I have to say that I am no linguist, but I think that "de" is similar in usage to "von" in German or "vander" (sometimes contracted to "ver") in Dutch. Generally, it means "of or from" and can indicate a town, geographic area, family or other affiliation (like a guild or trade). I used to think that the "de" was dropped due to a lack of knowledge of language by the customs officials in the country of destination. (In my family's case, it was the Kingdom of Hawaii). However, I have also seen the "de" dropped in certain informal situations (My Uncle Bill is called "Bill Gama" by his comtemporaries, even though his name is "de Gama").

He is currently serving his sixth term (through 1998) as a state representative.

  • Pedro Paulo Guerra de Medeiros asks to include one of the "best Brazilian lawyers ever", Wanderley de Medeiros from Goiania, GO, Brazil.. Pedro says that he makes this suggestion based on his own knowledge of law and also because Wanderley is a member of his family. He says that other attorneys also consider Wanderley to be an astonishing criminal lawyer and that a check of the Federal Council of Lawyers of Brazil (OAB) would bear this out.

Pedro also lives in Goiania, studies Mechanical Engineering and Law and loves computers. You can find him chatting at the irc.persogo.com.br server (#goiania).

Special folks:

  • Amee Medeiros writes to let us know that there is a small family of three with the last name Medeiros in Grass Valley, California.

  • Angela Upmeyer is trying to find information on her grandfather's family. Her grandfather's name is Arthur Edward Medeiros and his father was Louis Jessie Medeiros and from the Azores. (His wife 's name was Mae Pimentel). He had brothers named John, Tony and Alvie. If anyone has any information, please drop her an email. She mentions that she is from a large family, coming mostly from Oregon, California and Nebraska.

  • Bella Medeiros is a quality lady who lives in Taunton, Massachussetts with her sons James, Paul, Joseph and Edward. Bella is the godmother of MaryAnne (Coelho) Long, who is a friend of mine from the Hawaii newsgroups. MaryAnne and her husband , Earl, recently moved to Hawaii from Cape Cod. MaryAnne's family is also originally from Sao Miguel.

  • Feligenio Medeiros sends his best from Cambridge, Massachussets, and says that he enjoys the page.

  • Jorge Manuel Henriques de Medeiros Greno is from Aveiro, Portugal.

  • Kelly Madaris is doing research on the Madaris family tree. The research indicates that the family is descended from Domingo Maderas or Medieros (sic) b. 1620. Kelly asked if anyone has heard of this individual.

Of course, this brings up the point of alternative spellings of the name "Medeiros" and whether these are all originally Portuguese (and the spelling was subsequently modified) or whether there is an Indo-european prototype that has different spellings fr om country to country (as in, perhaps, Andrade/Andretti or Jordan/Jardine). I'll have to defer to the linguistic experts out there, but I think it deserves some discussion over in the Geneaology Page.

  • Luis Gonzaga de Medeiros is interested in the origin of the Medeiros and Araujo families (and surnames) and wants to do a tree. He has a degree in Business Administration from the Universidade F ederal do Rio Grande do Norte, Campus Avancado de Caico. Luis is from Caico, a little city lost in the interland of Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil. My father is cousin of Adelardo Medeiros' father.

Luis did his own homepage using the W3e HTML program, but it is in Portuguese. His daughter, Ana Celia Araujo de Medeiros also has her own homepage, which she did by herself. Luis says that she is a y oung IRC maniac.

  • Nelson Branco mentions that his Mom's maiden name is Medeiros. His mom, Maria Jose, and her family live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Her parents are Luis and Maria Jose and her sisters are Maria Conceicao Medeiros, Maria Bernadette Medeiros, and Maria Rosario Medeiros. She also has one brother, Joe Medeiros. He says that there are a few more Medeiros families in Edmonton and more in Toronto.

  • Renato de Oliveira Medeiros found the Medeiros Web on SAPO. He mentions that he is researching his ancestry and appreciates finding a fair amount of information here. (Renato, if I mi s-translated your message please let me know. I am really enbarrassed for never having learned Portuguese.)

  • Roberto Medeiros Varandas lives in Lisbon and his mother is from Sao Miguel.

  • Suzanne and Richard T. "Rick" Medeiros wonder if they have any traceable relatives on this list. Richard's father, Richard M., and grandfather, Manuel, are from Falmouth, Massachussetts.

  • They're not part of the global Medeiros family, but nice folks anyway, Victor M. Gameiro and his wife, Helena Bairos, e-mailed to say that it was a pleasure to see that after so many generations, Portuguese descendants still feel some attachement to the old country. They are first generation immigrants living in Montreal, Canada. Helena, is from Santa Maria, Açores and Victor am from Ribatejo, mainland Portugal.

Medeiros Families from Maui:

  • From Makawao: I received e-mail from Glenn Vares of the Glenn and Glen morning show on KPOA radio here on Maui. He asked if I could mention his mother Elsie (Medeiros) Vares from Pukalani and his aunts and uncles, including Stephen, Anthony a nd Roseline (Medeiros Estrella) of Makawao; and Henry R. of Waipahu.

He mentioned his grandparents, Joe and Mary Medeiros, were born in Hawaii, and their parents, Manuel and Margaret Medeiros, had immigrated from the old country. He also noted that his grandfather was a cowboy (or in Hawaiian, a paniolo) at the o ld Grove Ranch in Makawao. I remembered that my father's family also worked at Grove Ranch. To make a long story short, it turns out that we are cousins.

And now I've received e-mail from Glenn's sister, Iris (Vares) Blessinger, who adds that she was born in Puunene and raised in Lahaina.

  • From old Puunene: Donna Gomes Austin writes that her mother, Rose (Medeiros) Gomes. was born in Puunene, Maui in 1909. Her mother family included a brother named Joseph, and sisters Flora Franco, Virginia Freitas and Lydia Cambra. Her mother came to California and met and married Donna's father, who was from the Big Island of Hawaii.

Donna is interested in tracing her geneaology and perhaps visiting Sao Miguel to look for the birth and marriage records of her grandparents, Julia Borges and Joseph (Jose) Medeiros.

  • Donald J. Carvalho, St. Anthony High School class of 1962, mentions his uncle, Stanley Medeiros, who was originally from Paia and now lives in Wailuku.

  • All One Family? Probably not. From what I've been told, there were two unrelated Medeiros families originally from Puunene, two from Upcountry and at least one from Lahaina. There are also Medeiros families from Hana and Molokai.
