Find your own path... Me and my Xterra up at Ballpark...

Who the heck is The Makule Guy?

Smokin' at the LVCS... OK, I have had folks complain that I haven't updated this webpage in years. So, let me put up some new stuff. Hopefully, it'll be entertaining (but really, there are much more interesting websites out there).

So who am I? The name is Bill Medeiros and I've had the internet "handle" of The Makule Guy for over 10 years. Makule is Hawaiian for "old" and while it started out as semi-tongue-in-cheek, it is certainly apropos now. In Dublin, they'd call me Sean Fhear. In Lisboa, I'd be Dom Homem Velho. No sour grapes here - I enjoy being an old guy and indulging in a bad habit or two.

For the record, I was born and raised on the island of Maui. This is a great place to live if you are not into the rat race. How do I pay Bill's bills? I'm a GIS geek - that's Geographic Information Systems, basically computerized mapping and analysis. It's fun stuff and it's great to be a part of making life in this corner of the world a little better. Here's a project that is pretty cool.

Looking over the edge from Haleakala

Over the edge... My Xterra up on Haleakala...

The Xterra

That's my Xterra above and at the top of the page. The photos were taken in an area called Ball Park at about the 7,500-foot level on the slopes of Haleakala. The Nissan Xterra is a great truck - full frame, 265-horse V-6, no "fluffy" options. It ain't no mall cruiser. If you don't believe me, check out the Xterra Owners Club webpage.

The Rolling Stones

Rolling Stones Hawaii Tongue It's only rock and roll but I like it!!! I grew up with rock and roll. Over the last few years I've attended Rolling Stones concerts in Hawaii, Las Vegas and London. I got into the Stones because of a friend who is a Shidoobee.

The trip to England to see the Stones at Twickenham Rugby Stadium was a gas, gas, gas! If you have a copy of the Stones' Four Flicks DVD, you can watch the Twickenham concert that we attended. But the most interesting surprise was finding out that Lee Ho Fook's - as mentioned in Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" - really exists. So, if you are ever walking the streets of Soho in the rain, just walk down to Gerrard Street in Chinatown and have a big dish of beef chow mein.

Setting off the smoke alarm in Vegas

Smoking at LVCS2

Cigars and stuff

When I turned forty, many years ago, I decided that I didn't have enough bad habits. So, I took up cigar smoking. Like most newbie smokers I started with the cheap stuff and then moved up the ladder. I've kinda refined my tastes to hand made premiums from Honduras. My favorite is the El Rey del Mundo Robusto Larga, but I will gladly smoke one of yours. 8-)

Along the way I found a lot of other cigar smokers on the internet (in the newsgroup alt.smokers.cigars and at different online cigar forums. Over the years I've smoked cigars in quite a few interesting places. So, if you are a cigar smoker, here are some spots you might want to check out:

  • Churchill's Bar in the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver, CO.
  • The restored Pullman Car (once belonging to Louisa Mae Alcott) in the Main Street Station in Las Vegas, NV (while you are there check out the piece of the Berlin Wall in the men's restroom.
  • Lyzzard's Lounge in Prescott, AZ.
  • Ashton's B&B in New Orleans, LA.
  • Walking the streets of Soho in the rain in London, England.
  • Old Ebbitt Grill and Shelly's Back Room in Washington, DC.
  • La Casa del Habano near Revolucion y Cinco in Tiajuana, BC, Mexico.
  • Rock Bottom Brewery and The Field Pub in San Diego, CA.
I've also smoked with friends in Dallas/Fort Worth, but the anti-smoking folks have been screwing things up over there, so you may want to check before you go. Cigar weekly has a where to smoke database that you can search by state and province. And if you are headed to Las Vegas, check JC Simon's LasVegash website for upcoming cigar events.

Another website I haven't updated in years

Royal Flashman Society

Favorite authors

If you are still reading this, you may need to get a life. Anyway, my favorite authors are George MacDonald Fraser, author of the Flashman series, and Kinky Friedman, jewish country western singer turned crime novel author turned animal rescue ranch operator turned Texas gubernatorial candidate.

I'm pretty tired of typing, so I am gonna end here and update this page in another nine years or so.

8-)
