Congratulations
to
Talking Stories, the group that supports local storytellers
and their local culture, language and ideals. I saw the play, Ai!
You Stay Hapai! the weekend before Mother’s Day May 2006.
My ears welcomed the “high” Pidgin used in the play’s
script. Pidgin is warm, charming, and simple. Only the important words
are used to express a full sentence. There’s no need for elaboration,
we get the idea. The writing team of Kim Compoc, Joy Enomoto, Kealiiwahine
Hokoana, Lori Freitas, Cheri Nashiwa, and Christi Keliikoa did a successful
job on structuring the play and making it flow smoothly. I thought
the few interactions with the audience, though, stalled the momentum.
Since that evening, all the actors are now seasoned ones. The strong
cast consisted of Quddus Ajimine, Kathy Beard, Wailani Farm, Bernie
Freitas, Cia Goods, George Kaimiola, and Nuu Sing-Kahalehau.
I was really pleased to see professional actor, Moses Goods, perform
his part without overpowering the others. His demeanor showed self-confidence.
Lana Queddeng played the light-hearted kupuna “Aunty”
who knew what was what. She took over the scene every time she entered
the stage. I wished that Cheri Nashiwa slowed down on her line deliveries
as she seemed rushed and a little nervous. Her character Mei’s
sincere emotions, though, shined through. I wondered why the character
of “Charlene” wasn’t given more depth and more lines.
Behind the scenes, Ululani Kalua lit up the show.
I look forward to more Talking Stories productions.
