Kia Orana and Welcome to the Muri Beachcomber Hotel

Your hosts are Helen & Peter Kemp and Lynley & Bill Tillick and Suzi.

The following notes have been prepared for your information and assistance. Should there be anything we can assist you with personally, please don't hesitate to ask - we are here to help make your holiday a memorable one.

OFFICE HOURS
Monday - Friday 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. (closed for lunch)
Saturday 8:30 to Noon. Closed on Sunday.

TELEPHONE
There is a guest telephone on the wall outside the office (just a simple extension of the office phone) and another in the Guest Laundry building. Local calls are free to our guests. International calls may be made COLLECT by dialing the operator on 015. We can assist with placing price-required calls.

TRANSPORT
A local bus service runs from 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday (2 buses per hour), and from 8am to Noon on Saturdays (1 clockwise bus per hour only). There is also a night bus service. Timetables are available at the Office. Tickets, including Day Passes, are available at Reception.

SHOPPING
The shops in Avarua are open from 8am to 4pm daily Monday to Friday; on Saturday all shops in Avarua close at midday.
Banks are open from 9am until 3pm on Monday to Friday only.
Local shops open early (6am) and close late in the evening. Limited local shopping is available on Sundays.

LOCAL SHOPS
The local shop next door to Muri (Tangitoa Store or Mere's) is usually open from 6am to 7:30pm, Monday to Saturday. On Sunday Mere's hours 6:30am - 8am and 6pm - 8pm. Mere's has fresh bread daily, and a selection of beer, wine and spirits.
The other side of Pacific Resort there is another local store which is open each day. This shop also is the nearest seller of petrol.

MAIL
Stamps may be purchased at the main Post Office in Avarua, at Titikaveka Post Office, or at Pacific Resort. Mail can be left with our office for posting, or posted either locally by 10am (Tangitoa Store or Titikaveka Post Office) or at the Main Post Office. Mail closing times for the Main Post Office are listed in our office above the postcards.

SERVICE
Rooms are serviced every day except Sundays. Please adopt the European practice of placing your used towels on the floor so that we don't wash clean linen unnecessarily, thus helping us with conservation.

COMPLIMENTARY ITEMS
Complimentary fruit, milk and fruit juice are in your room on arrival. Tea, coffee and sugar are supplied daily.

GUEST LAUNDRY FACILITIES
A washing machine, dryer and iron are available in the Guest Laundry adjacent to the stream behind Rooms 5 and 19. The iron is free of charge (please ensure it is turned off after use). The washing machine and dryer operate from token-controlled timer switches. Tokens may be purchased at the Office. Operating instructions are posted on the laundry wall. A key on your room tag is for the laundry doors. There is also a good, same day, commercial laundry service. Should you wish to make use of this service please inquire at the Office.

ROOM SECURITY
Although we don't have a problem as yet, the Island is not as free of burglaries as it used to be. We advise you to lock your room when you are absent. You should also sleep with the doors secured from the inside.

SECURITY CABINET
There is a security cabinet in your kitchen cupboard for storage of passports, money and other valuables.

NOTICE BOARD A board outside the Office door will let you know about daily events and other items of interest.

PETANQUE COURT
Adjacent to the Guest Laundry we have a Petanque (Boules) Court. The necessary "boule" and a summary of the rules are kept in the Guest Laundry. Please return them after use.

OTHER FACILITIES
We have some adapter plugs for electrical appliances. Please ask at the Office. Gas Barbeques are available around the units. Instructions are elsewhere in this compendium. Please ask at the Office if you require further guidance.

ANIMALS & BIRDS
PLEASE do not encourage or feed the local cats, dogs, chickens and mynah birds; all are a nuisance and create hygiene problems. On NO ACCOUNT should animals be taken into rooms.

COCONUTS
Please do not use our kitchen knives to open coconuts. Ask our gardener, or ask the duty managers, they will be happy to help you.

ELECTRICITY
The electricity is 230 AC, 50 cycles. Electricity is very expensive on the island and we request your cooperation in conserving the use where possible. As a courtesy to your neighbours, please turn off your outside light when retiring.

WATER SUPPLY All water entering the property is filtered. We change the filter twice each day, usually around 8:30am and 3pm. Water flow will cease for approximately 2 minutes during these periods. The water is generally considered to be safe for drinking but, because it is untreated some people prefer to boil it.

HOT WATER
We rely on solar heating for hot water. In the event of there being insufficient heating just press the red button above the bathroom doorway (Rms 1-12), or the switch on the wall near the switch box (Rms 14-19). The electrical element is on a thermostat and will turn off automatically. The tank is shared with the adjacent room, and if they press the switch your indicator light will also glow. If the water is already hot, the switch will not activate the electric element.

SANITATION
As we have septic tanks on the Island, we ask that you do not put disposable nappies or sanitary towels down the toilets.

DOORS
Please hook doors back when you open them, so as to avoid damage to screens or broken glass if the doors are blown or knocked.

LOUNGERS
You are welcome to take the loungers and deck chairs onto the beach on condition that you return them after use. Please DO NOT take chair or daybed cushions outside as the hot sun ruins the fabrics.

SWIMMING AND SNORKELING
The lagoon is safe for swimming, particularly out in front of Muri Beachcomber. If venturing further, such as to the off-shore motus, we recommend that you wear shoes to avoid cuts from coral. Do not go anywhere near reef passages (breaks in the reef) where the tidal currents are extremely dangerous, and extra care is needed where the lagoon narrows down past Pacific Resort as tidal flows can be quite strong there.

WATER SPORTS EQUIPMENT
The Aquasports Centre next door hires out canoes, windsurfers, sailing dinghies, snorkeling equipment etc. It offers a 10% discount to Muri guests in the mornings. In addition, we also have a few snorkels & masks for loan to guests. Pacific Resort also hires out its boats.

CHURCH SERVICES
Many religious denominations are represented on the island. Most services commence at 10am. DRESS: Women should cover their shoulders and no flowers in the hair. Men should wear long trousers if possible.

DRESS CODE
Nudity and "topless" sunbathing offends the local people and we request that you respect their sensitivities. Bikinis and very short shorts for the ladies are unacceptable in village or town areas.

DAILY PAPER
We get one copy of the daily (Mon - Sat) paper which is hung in the Office. You are welcome to drop in and read it.
