Maui is the winter calving grounds for the Northern Pacific Humpback Whale. These majestic giants migrate from the frigid waters of the Arctic to give birth and nurse their young in the warm, protected waters primarily off Maui's Western shoreline. The Humpbacks arrive in sufficient numbers to guarantee sightings from Christmas thru March and offer the spectacular "behavioral traits" we all love to see. Aerial displays including breeches, tail slaps and pec slaps are frequently seen from the comfort and safety of our fast and stable rafts.
Learn about these mammals from captains and crew who have worked with research teams studying these endangered whales.
Maui is the 13th National Marine Sanctuary in the United States. All vessels are required to shut down and limit their approach to 100 yards from these whales.
Humpbacks however are social animals and sometimes curious and will approach boats on their own. Much to the delight of our passengers and crew, we have had many encounters with whales approaching us and actually swimming right under the raft!
Because of the superior seaworthiness and speed of the Manta Raiv, we can cover more ocean and get out where the slow cattle boats can not go.
Join us for a whale of a trip and learn about Hawaii's State mammal!
