The meter comes with calibration certificate, standard replaceable 9-volt battery, and one year limited warranty which covers parts and labor. Abuse of the meter voids the warranty. Since the quality control inspection of all meters is thorough, one can expect many years of reliable operation with reasonable care & handling of this instrument.
MAGNETIC FIELD:
The DC Magnetometer (gaussmeter), complete with a universal (axial/transverse) magnetic sensor and battery, is only $380 (US). It's the lowest price ever available for a digital gaussmeter with an external probe, which is essential for measurement of magnets.
This magnetometer measures in three ranges, and indicates the sign (north or south). An offset control on the gaussmeter lets you adjust the "zero" field level by ± 10 gauss. The gauss meters' output is monotonic to the last digit (± 0.005%), linear to ± 1 % at 20,000 gauss, and overall accuracy is ± 2 % from 30 to 110oF. The meter comes with a NIST- traceable calibration certificate.
The DC Magnetometer has a minimum resolution of 0.01 gauss, or about 1/50 of the Earth field on the minimum range of 200 gauss. The maximum range is 20,000 gauss. (In comparison, the strongest permanent magnet material has an internal flux density or gap-magnet field of about 14,000 gauss. Measurement of the face of a single magnet will yield about 1/2 as much, or 7000 gauss at maximum.)
The DC Magnetometer/ DC Gaussmeter can detect whether magnets have lost their strength or check for field patterns. Unlike most digital magnetometers which are 3 1/2 digits, this one is 4 1/2 digits (20,000 counts both positive and negative magnetic polarity), so you can see very small differences in a strong field (such as 1 gauss at 19,000 gauss).
The universal Hall sensor (see product 10310) is 1.1mm thick x 4.3mm wide, on a one-meter-long plug-in cable.
This standard sensor tip can be kept straight or bent at right angles repeatedly, to measure magnetic field either parallel (axial) or perpendicular (transverse) to the cable direction. Update rate is 3 per second, but on the 199.99 (most sensitive) range, a 1-second time constant filter slows the response, and noise level is several hundredths of a gauss. For faster and more stable readings at these low field strengths, inquire about the High-Stability Version of this meter.
A typical use for the meter is measurement of permanent magnets, such as in DC motors. These can be partially demagnetized if driven beyond their amperage rating, even if for a brief time.
Other uses include electromagnets, speaker gaps, and measurement of high current.

- HIGHER SENSITIVITY: The High-Stability version of the DC Magnetometer is preferred for measuring residual magnetism in steel parts and for magnetic field mapping around large magnets. It is also $380.00 USD (shipping included to contingent US, foreign orders inquire for freight cost) and has only one measurement range of .01 - 200 gauss. This version is more stable and has a faster update speed (in this low-field range) than does the standard DC Magnetometer. (Generally, the maximum residual magnetism that steel parts can retain is about 50 gauss.) A much higher sensitivity DC Milligauss Meter (0.00001 - 2 gauss) is also available.
