AlphaLab, Inc.'s Air Ion Counter is a substantial improvement over
previously available ion meters, increasing ion measurement capability &
affordability to anyone. It costs less than one fifth the price of other quality & capable
ion meters, and is smaller, easier to use, requiring only one 9-V
battery.
The Air Ion Counter has the same sensitivity (down to 10 ions per cubic
centimeter) of very expensive meters. Due to it's full electrostatic
shielding and a fan throughput of 800 cubic centimeters / second, the AIC
can supply accurate readings, even in adverse conditions, such as gusty
winds or strong electrostatic fields. The Air Ion Counter can be used for the detection of natural and
artificial ions. Natural ions include those generated from the decay of
radioactive minerals and radon gas; ions generated by fires, lightning,
and evaporating water; and ions associated with storm activity. Note
that in fair weather at sea level, typical ion counts are about 400
negative and 500 positive ions per cubic centimeter. Before a storm,
positive ions increase dramatically. During a storm, negative ions
increase. The Ion Counter can gauge the output and coverage of artificial sources
such as ion generators, improperly grounded air conditioning vents,
combustion vapor and electrically charged or heated surfaces, and
plasma-discharge ions in air and other gases. The Air Ion Counter pulls air (or any other gas with ions present)
through a parallel plate assembly. Outer two plates are held at
polarization potential ("+" or "-"). Center is the linear detector
plate. Air gap is 4mm and polarization field is 1000 V/m. Air flow: 800 cm3/sec (linear speed: 40 cm/sec) Ion collection efficiency: 65% Input resistance: 5 X 1010 Ohms Dynamic range: 10 ions/cm3 (corresponds to 10 microVolts at detector
plate) to 1,999,000 ions/cm3 (corresponds to 2 Volts at detector plate) PLEASE NOTE: A customized version of the Air Ion Counter capable of
measuring up to 20,000,000 ions / cm3 is available for the Special
Internet Sale Price of $465.00 (US dollars), plus shipping / handling
costs. The 20,000,000 ions / cm3 Air Ion Counter has 1/10th the resolution of
the standard 1,999,000 ions / cm3 Air Ion Counter, thus the range is 100
ions / cm3 to 20,000,000 ions / cm3. PHOTO OF THIS VERSION APPEARS
BELOW NEW SPECIAL ORDER VERSION OF THE AIR ION COUNTER: A special order
customized version of the Air Ion Counter capable of measuring up to
200,000,000 ions / cm3 is available for the Special Internet Sale Price
of $485.00 (US dollars), plus shipping / handling costs.
Please allow up to three weeks for shipment of this NEW variant model
only. The 200,000,000 ions / cm3 Air Ion Counter has 1/10th the resolution of
the 20,000,000 ions / cm3 Air Ion Counter, thus the range is 1000 ions /
cm3 to 200,000,000 ions / cm3. Special AC Version of the Air Ion Counter (either 1,999,999 ions / cm3
version or 20,000,000 ions / cm3 version) is available for an additional
$60.00 (US dollars) - For Special AC Air Ion Counters to be used in the
US, Canada and Mexico, the special 12VDC connector includes an AC
adapter - For Special AC Air Ion Counters to be used in China, Hong
Kong, Japan, Taiwan, Europe, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc. an AC adapter is
not included with the Special 12VDC Connector, though it does include a
plug which the customer must solder / connect the correct adapter to. A NEW custom version of any of the Air Ion Counter models is available with an Output Jack which will connect to an A to D card (though you will have to locate your own card and computer programs to monitor readings using this feature) for an addition $45.00 Optional Data Output Jack: $45.00 Settling time: approximately 10 seconds Noise level (10 seconds averaged): 10 ions/cm3 Accuracy: +/- 25% for fast ions (mobility greater than 8 x 15-5 m/s
per V/m - these are the most numerous ions. The Ion Counter is less sensitive to "slow" ions (such as charged pieces
of dust). Batteries: One 9V standard transistor radio or alkaline type. Battery life: heavy duty 15 hours on STANDBY, or 3 hours on MEASURE.
Alkaline is 45 hours on STANDBY, or 6 hours on MEASURE. LO BAT indicator
comes on at 7.5 Volts (for each battery, or total 15 Volts), when all 3
decimal points are displayed. Indicates 10 to 30 minutes of MEASURE time
remain. Battery drain: 7 mA on STANDBY, 30 mA on MEASURE. Fails at 7
V/battery. Ion Selectivity (crosstalk): 20x Sensitivity with POLARITY switch in center position (neither "+" or "-")
1/10 of normal, but adds together "+" and "-"ions. (Example: 600 "+"
and 200 "-" will read 1/10 of 600 minus 200, or 40 ions/cm3). Warranty: One Year PLEASE NOTE: Bypassing the battery with another power supply or
attempting to install an AC adapter VOIDS THE WARRANTY and repair and
freight charges will be the responsibility of the customer, since the
attempt usually damages the Air Ion Counter. PLEASE SCROLL up the page
to the Special 12VDC Connector section if you would like to have a
non-battery power source installed at the factory prior to shipment by
AlphaLab technicians on your Air Ion Counter for $60.00 USD. As of November 2001, the Air Ion Counter no longer requires a long
warmup time or a long wait when changing polarity, so the three decimal
points no longer display when changing polarity. The new model only requires one 9 volt battery and low battery is now
indicated when all three decimal points are displayed. The single
battery lasts about 1 ½ times as long as the old two battery system.
In spite of lower battery power, the fan is more efficient, and draws
800 cc per second. When measuring ions near a negative ionizer, you and the ionizer tend to
charge negative. To get the most accurate readings, a ground connector
cord is included. Plug it in to the right side of the Air Ion Counter.
The clip should be connected to a grounded object (such as a soil
ground, plumbing, water that is in contact with plumbing, the center
screw in a wall or switch outlet, the large ground prong in a 3-terminal
plug, or the metal case of an appliance that is grounded). One way to find out if you are not properly grounded, is that you will
notice that you carry a static charge after exposure to an ionizer, and
you will create a spark when you touch ground. Improper grounding will
repel negative ions, causing the count to be too low. In fact, it will
actually create excess positive ions if you are standing directly in
front of the ionizer output and you are pointing the counter away from
the ionizer. (That is, the ionizer is at your back). POPULAR MECHANICS - Upcoming New Product Review - Will likely appear in
