Grand Wailea: Our Home Away From Home
My wife, Rochelle, and my daughter, Kai, have been operating a small art and jewelry business at the Grand Wailea Resort, Hotel & Spa since it opened 15 years ago. They go down every day of the year and interact with hotel visitors who enjoy meeting a local person and connecting as friends. My wife is born and raised in Hawaii and is called hapa-haole or half local and half caucasian. In her case she is half Okinawan, but is mistaken regularly for being part Hawaiian even by local people. Before becoming the Grand Wailea's Artist in Residence Rochelle had a very amazing career handpainting on clothing she designed and sold around the world. I've included a photo taken a few years ago for a major ad campaign featuring one of her designs...a crepe de chine kimono top and tube dress from one of Honolulu's top boutiques at Ala Moana Shopping Center
.
My wife paints amazing images from small single fish and flowers to exotic tropical floral bouquets. Over the years she's developed a clientle from the Grand Wailea that are now collectors who pick up a piece every time they revisit the Grand Wailea. I've included a couple of my favorites in this blog. One of these days I'll show Kai's custom one of a kind jewelry designs. It's great when artists live in the family and can do their dream of making a living with art.
