Viewing nature from this close and low of a perspective is really an awesome experience. This is very different from the feel of a larger boat, and for some they may prefer the safety of a larger Catermeran. Everyone has an unobstructed view, and usually you don't have any more than about 20 people. The crew loves what they do, and we saw about 10 breaches, 8 dorsal fin slaps, and much more. We had one of the 30 ton marvels, shoot up and breach only 20 yards in front of the zodiac. He flew out of the water like a torpedo, and was both startling with his power, and jaw dropping at the same time. Trying to photograph a breaching whale with a digital camera has it's challenges, video is much easier to catch the action . We also saw a Mama whale teaching her calf, how to flap her pectoral fins, only about 15 yards away The captain, told us many interesting facts:
1. The males are the only one's that sing songs, and the colony of males play their theme the whole time their in Hawaii note for note, and if it get's changed during their trip, the whole group changes their songs too. Next year, they all come back, playing a different song, note for note.
2. The Mama's are the largest whales (up to 40 tons) and the Male's get up to about 30 tons. The Adult whales don't eat their entire time while in Hawaii, living off of their body fat, and the Mama's loose over half of the their body weight while here, making them unable to sustain twins.
3. The Baby calves are approximately 2,000 pounds at birth, gaining up to 300 pounds per day, while in Hawaii. They would die of hypothermia in Alaska within a matter of hours if born there, and that these are really "Hawaiian Humpback Whales" . because you always tell everyone that your from where you were born, not where you eat.
This is a great tour, and a photo opportunity on every turn. The exhilaration from a high speed zodiac is unmatched, but truly not for the faint of heart.
I found this site to be one of the best that I reviewed. Very informitive and helpful in helping us to plan our "very first' trip to paradise!
Thank You so much!
