How South Maui Choppers Got Their Start
Years before children came into their lives, Ray & Cindy rode bikes, but as the family grew so did the responsibilities so riding fell off as a thing of the past. Then about 6 years ago, owner Cindy Valois stopped by her son's house when a friend had his motorcycle there. He offered to let her ride it... and an hour and a worried owner later, she was smitten with riding once again. She asked her husband Ray if they could ride again, and Ray was definitely up for the challenge.
Well they wanted to buy a Harley, but didn't want a bike that looked like any one else's and they were on a Honda budget. So they started to build their dream bike in the second room of their 699 square foot condo and "Pepe" was born. Their friends and family were impressed and wanted to have them build motorcycles for them. Needing to expand quickly, they rented a neighbor's 2-car garage, and a few months later "Joker" and "Dragon" were created.
These bikes were growing in demand, so Cindy and Ray moved to a storage unit with 300 square feet. They quickly doubled that space, and within a year were working out of a 2100 square foot area, with bikes moving like hot cakes. They are now at 330 Ohukai, Suite 115, Kihei, Maui, HI 96753. They have a full-fledged shop with cherry Harleys and the most incredible Arlen Ness Choppers in Hawaii. In fact, South Maui Choppers is the only place in the world that you can rent Arlen Ness Motorcycles.
Ray said "We had this guy that had been riding motorcycles for 30 plus years and said this was the nicest Bike - Chopper that he's ever ridden." South Maui Choppers offers custom tours and rentals and Harley rentals as well. The tours are a great way to see the best of the best with excellent guides. They have an upcountry tour that can go all the way to Ulupalakua, a West-side tour going up to Kapalua and a halfway-to-Hana tour to the Keanae Peninsula or other points of interest.
Cindy says "Being on one of these bikes is so incredible and you have all of your senses come alive, the smells of upcountry in spring, Kapalua in the morning or Makena at sunset." Ray reminisced about his first trip to Maui many years ago prior to moving here, and that they had to save for a few years for their vacation. He understands the cost of travel, and wants to make sure that you are treated like family and are appreciated for the efforts that it took to travel here. Don't come all the way to Maui and not experience one of the greatest bike tours anywhere!
