Small number of people responsible for alcohol ban
Is anybody really seeing the big picture here? Let me try to give you the Reader's Digest version of what is going on with banning alcohol at Charley Young Beach.
Ninety-eight percent of the time, the beach is being used with an unsaid cooperation and understanding for other beachgoers and everything is just another day at the beach. Now enter the other 2 percent who have not a care in the world for anybody but their own arrogant selves and who also have no respect for the residents and all other beachgoers. This 2 percent (and that is a radically high percentage) is the problem and they are not the regular everyday crowd. They seem to come around just long enough to upset what would normally be just another day at the beach. So instead of targeting the problem and making for a simple solution, we instead have our rights slip away right from under our feet.
Here's the kicker, these 2 percent are part of the larger unemployed percentage that our lawmakers would like to give free health care to. Makes you wonder why we vote just so we can work for others.

"You guys had a chance to police the area -to voluntarily make sure that the drinking and carrying-on was stopped and you failed. It is because of this, the council stepped in. It was your failure to keep a place where you congregate safe for everyone. As for banning kids; I'm guessing you're using the "A Modest Proposal" idea; to argue with ad ridiculum logic. But it comes off as nothing but sour grapes. "

They're getting so big we can't see the ocean. There should be a height restriction. Ban cigarettes. How many times can we have smoke in our face and still have a good time, not to mention all the butts in the sand. How about banning fat people, hairy people, too-skinny people and bathing suits that are too risque? Let's stop the elementary school playground stupidity, council members, and not let our emotions dictate what is the right way to solve problems. This so-called problem at the beach is overstated and does not need this much attention. As a beach user for all my life I can say there is no excessive, out-of-control drinking on Maui beaches. Who cares about the Mainland and Honolulu and what they do? Let's keep Maui real. Jerry Scheltens Kihei "

Or are the police too busy checking on seat belt offenders? At the rate that our council members are banning this and that, soon we will be under the control of our council. Let's try to find solutions instead of a ban! Let people enjoy drinking at the beaches and control those who are rowdy instead of banning all the beachgoers. At this rate, they will one day ban drinking at all Kihei beaches, Lahaina beaches and north shore beaches! Our council should get of this ban mentality and find solutions! Francis K. Ibara Kahului "

Since the County Council has really stepped up regulation based upon the least responsible of people, here's are a few suggestions for future legislation: I've noticed on Maui a steady increase in the number of drivers who play their music way too loud for existing noise ordinances. I know that it must be difficult for officers to enforce this ban, so why don't we make it illegal to have a car stereo? Or how about the state law that requires people to smoke at least 20 feet away from an entrance? I see people violate that all the time, so why don't the sages on the Maui County Council make smoking illegal? I know pit bulls get mentioned often, but all breeds of dogs can and do bite, so wouldn't it be a good idea to make dog ownership illegal? A majority of DUI offenders are under the age of 35, so shouldn't the drinking age be raised to 35? If you're over the age of 60, you have a significantly higher rate of automobile accidents, so why don't make it illegal to drive over the age of 60? Don't worry, County Council, your constituents know that our education system will improve, our drug problem will disappear and the tourists will return all by themselves. Just keep focusing on what matters the most, a couple of unruly drunken people playing volleyball on the beach. William Sythes Makawao "

She asked the audience to consider the problems encountered there and decide if those problems would be better or worse with alcohol involved. Johnson went on to explain that beaches are state lands where alcohol is prohibited, but because title has changed from state to county at Charley Young, the state law has not been enforced. She pointed out that it makes no sense for the county to allow drinking at this one beach when the state bans it at all other beaches. Let's keep all of our beaches alcohol free. Let's also agree that South Maui sunsets are a nightly draw to our parks for visitors and local families. Alcohol is a common element in many of those celebrations. Let's open the discussion to the entire community and come up with a reasonable compromise that would allow some alcohol consumption at some county park locations during limited hours. I don't know the national statistics, but from all research I can find the legal use of alcohol in county and city parks is very much the exception. Let's work together as a community and come up with a reasonable plan that accommodates the wishes of the people that live here but still gives Maui police and county park rangers solid options for enforcement. "I think banning of drinking at all parks and beaches should be done. The man speaking for friends of charly young beach is a perfect example of what drinking will do. He is at a city council meeting and disregards common sense, cause he might be drunk?, and grabs Wayne Nisiki's personal flag from his table. You fail to realize Barry that your behavior was out of place and something only a drunk would do. Have you apologized to Wayne...given his flag back? You have given yet another example as to why drinking should be banned. It makes people do stupid things and poisons your body destroying your kidey's and liver...and in your case brain cells."
