Recent Massive Waves and The Weather

Rain. Lots of it. For the past week or so Maui has been through torrents and torrents of rain. A large storm system passed/is passing over Maui and it has brough a massive amount of continuous rain. At some points during this storm visibility was not only ZERO but my windshield wipers simply could not keep up. I had to pull off to the side of the road and wait it out. I don't exactly have crappy windshield wipers either. They are perfect and my windshield is Rain-X'd. Spooky! Wind speeds were also up with some places reporting gusts between 50-70mph. Yikes!

A very large disorganized swell system has also been hitting the islands bringing waves up to a reported 80 feet. 80 feet!! I would have taken pictures but I did not feel like getting out of the car during a high winds and torrential rains. As for surfing: Screw that! :p. It's been too rainy, too windy and way too huge for me to even think of attempting it. Some folks now have videos of the large waves here on maui. Here are some youtube links.

H'ookipa on one of the cleaner days. This is a video of some of the "smaller" waves this past week.

Ho'okipa on one of the larger, gnarlier days. These are about 20-30 feet (faces).

Honolua on one of the larger, crazier days with a few tow in surfers charging it.

KITV news report

These large waves combined with the weather is how Maui is supposed to be. At least, this is how I remember it from my childhood. This is the "normal" weather. I love it.
