Allergies - Maui and Me

Allergies: We all hate 'em. For most of my life I've prided myself on not having "allergies" as people call them. Despite the fact that I am supremely allergic to shellfish and crustaceans, I have not had any of the typical "allergies" that people often complain about. Until recently.

Over the past year or so I've noticed that I've been getting what I can best describe as Hay Fever and I'm not the only one. Some other people that i've talked to also explained to me that it's been a relatively recent occurance.  The think that I notice the most is that these allergies happen when the winds change and especially, when I stay in Kahului. I understand that allergies can develope over time (with age) but to me it is more than a coincidence that myself and a few others that I know have experienced the same thing at about the same time. Am I paranoid? No. Do I suffer from memory loss? No. Do I suffer from memory loss? Yes.  Am I worried? No but I am quite pissed off.
Diphenhydramine seems to be the only thing that helps with these allergies but that also makes you very very drowsy. Total bummer.

Possible Connections:
I have a few theories for the cause of this new and unwelcome condition I am experiencing.
  •  I am simply paranoid and jump to conclusions because I have developed a fricken allergy to pollen or something
  • HC&C has recently changed a chemical(s) that they are using for their cane fields which has slightly altered the genetic structure of the cane to produce a pollen which I am now susceptible to (or they use a new strain) [but this is even more paranoia!]
  • There are hidden mold patches all around kahului especially after it rains which is often when this happens to me (highly unlikely)
  • Aliens have come down and probed me in a very uncomfortable way which causes random allergic reactions (This  is obviously it!)
  • The damned Kahului Harbor.
Sources say that it's because of the Harbor and it's wonderful way of...........harboring bacteria, viruses, molds, parasites, fleas, politics (nice segway eh? :p), Taking Back Sunday - Ya know all the things that can make you extremely sick to the point that you want slash your wrists!

Anyone else notice this phenomena or is it just me (and a few friends and strangers?)  I guess if you're gonna visit Maui and you get allergies a lot, don't forget your Towel! and your allergy meds.

Well, right now my allergies have completely stopped so I no longer care to continue with this article. PEEC

"Hello. Hopefully someone can help us. My fiance and I visited Maui this past February and she was hit extremely hard by some type of allergies. She has normally super high energy but with the allergies effecting her she was very sluggish. We were there from the 4th through the 14th of Feb. we would like to return but would like to go during a less effecting allergy season. Any recommendations? Any idea what was effecting her during this time? Is there a better time of the year to go?"

"I think it has to do with the SugareCane Because I have been getting very sick at least 1 week a month and I have no doubts in my mind its do to the Cane Burning..."

"You might want to look at a natural way to completely remove allergies at They are in Kauai but will be in Maui one 3 day weekend a month. Really works and no needles or drugs. Yes!. :-)"

"I know a number of people from Honolulu that did not have symptoms until they moved to Maui. What's different between the two locations? I suspect a lot more agriculture next to residential zones (pesticides, cane flowers, cane burning smoke/soot, pollution/fallout from the factory). "
