The Legend of the White Lady and others.

Sep. 20, 2007 (8406 views)

Ghost stories are everywhere. They are in Russia, South America, Europe-all over. Hawai'i is no exception. I was talking to one of my aunties yesterday and she mentioned she got "scared like she saw the white lady". I had to giggle. I thought to myself "hey what a great tidbit for would-be tourists!".There are few variations and I'm not quite sure how this came to be (perhaps a historian could verify) but supposedly if you are driving over a gulch, a white lady (ghost...

Small number of people responsible for alcohol ban

Sep. 14, 2009 (8074 views)

Is anybody really seeing the big picture here? Let me try to give you the Reader's Digest version of what is going on with banning alcohol at Charley Young Beach. Ninety-eight percent of the time, the beach is being used with an unsaid cooperation and understanding for other beachgoers and everything is just another day at the beach. Now enter the other 2 percent who have not a care in the world for anybody but their own arrogant selves and who also have no respect for the residents and...

Spinner or Bottlenose ~ How do you tell?

Apr. 21, 2009 (6799 views)

We are often asked about porpoise and dolphins when we are out on the water during one of our marine safaris.  First, we do not have porpoise in Hawaiian waters.  Porpoise have very blunt rostrums, short, triangular dorsal fins and their teeth are spade shaped.  In the above photos, the triangular-shaped, dark dorsal fin is a spinner dolphin, whose rostrum...

Maui Bus (Public Transportation)

Aug. 23, 2007 (6536 views)

When I first came here in 1994, I was surprised that there was no public buses! Coming from the busy city of Manila, I expected that there would be some type of public transportation here. But no! Guess what I had to do the next few weeks of my arrival? Yep - I had to learn how to drive. It's either I learn how to drive or I get stuck at home! Now there are Maui Busses going around. They are not a lot, and they are not bulky. They look like little tourist buses going around. However,...

Public School Locker Searches

Nov. 2, 2007 (6417 views)

The Board of Education voted in favor of allowing student locker searches, pending public hearings and the approval of the Governor. The intent is to help reduce the amount of drugs and weapons on campuses. The ACLU threatened a lawsuit if the Board included language which would have allowed school administrators to search with or without reason, so the BOE approved language which allows searches only if there is reasonable suspicion. Hawaii's school campuses are open, unlike the...

Zippy's on Maui

Aug. 20, 2008 (5860 views)

Well, Zippy's is now offically opened on Maui.  Last week when we went for dinner at 8:30pm (pre-opening week) the waiter or whomever he was said that they, the restaurant side is closed.  I asked what time you close?  He said at 8.  So I asked him are you guys closing at 8 everynight?  He said yes.  What a lie!  Rookies!  Then he told us to go to the Take Out area to see if they are opened.  While walking over, we asked a worker if they are opened,...

Best Dessert On Maui

Sep. 20, 2008 (4989 views)

I can tell you nothing rocks like fudge. Is there? I dare you to tell me otherwise... Nuts or no nuts... good fudge is from the gods! A cup of coffee and a pound of fudge... I'm salivating as I type. I have been blessed with some friends who can make unbelievable fudge - and also love me! So, I get fudge for my birthday and most holidays. I am not too proud to beg and plead for it. Heather lives on the mainland and Cassie...

Donuts on a Stick

Mar. 1, 2008 (4965 views)

I was looking for the Komoda T Store and Bakery listing to give a review, and it's not listed on Maui.net.  So I decided to dedicate this blog posting to the wonders of this upcountry bakery.First I have to say I miss Dunkin Donuts.  I mean I really, really miss Dunkin Donuts.  If there's anyone on the mainland reading this, and you're close to a Dunkin Donuts, send me an e-mail - I may be willing to do a trade if you can overnight me a few cinnamon cake donuts. My only...

Allergies - Maui and Me

Nov. 23, 2007 (4852 views)

Allergies: We all hate 'em. For most of my life I've prided myself on not having "allergies" as people call them. Despite the fact that I am supremely allergic to shellfish and crustaceans, I have not had any of the typical "allergies" that people often complain about. Until recently.Over the past year or so I've noticed that I've been getting what I can best describe as Hay Fever and I'm not the only one. Some other people that i've talked to also explained to me...
