Halloween - At Front Street Lahaina, and all over Maui

Oct. 6, 2007 (2438 views)

About two years ago, I told my husband "I have been living on Maui for 10 years (more or less), and I have not once gone to the Front Street for Halloween - I've got to do it at least once". And so we did. We went in 2005. Having kids though, I main focus was the "children's parade" and we did not stay for the later night "mardi grass" type celebration. Are you planning on going to Lahanina this year for Halloween?...

Water... to use or not to use

Oct. 1, 2007 (4293 views)

Maui County is again faced with a water shortage. We typically go through this each summer with mandatory cut-backs on usage upcountry, and voluntary cut-backs in Central and South Maui. Why the water shortage exists is probably a combination of environmental, social, and infrustructure problems. Solutions are a few years away. Meanwhile, conservation is being pushed as the solution to the immediate need. The County's Water Department is recommending a mandatory 10% cut back for Central and...

Sep. 25, 2007 (2680 views)

Rubbah Slippahs or just "Slippahs" is how we say slippers. Don't get this confused! You people on the mainland, etc call them "Flip Flops". Again, don't get em confused. They're SLIPPAHS over here. Nothing you or anyone can say or do will change that. Flip Flops? No. Slippahs? Yes.You can use Flip Flops if you want to sound like a Kook. ...

Flying Interisland

Sep. 20, 2007 (2246 views)

I just returned from a brief trip to Honolulu (Oahu).  The trip was unexpected and last minute.  Searching for the best air fares was easy, there weren't any.  I checked out Hawaiian Airlines, Aloha, Go!, Cheap Tickets, Priceline, Last Minute Travel, etc.  I was amazed at the cost.  Yeah, I haven't traveled in a while, but the cheapest I could find was $39 one way.  This price was for week day travel, at the least convenient times of course.  I sure do miss the days when you could buy flight...

I cant wait for the weekend!! Perfect Days

Sep. 20, 2007 (2219 views)

I sit at work doing what I need to do sometimes more and from Monday through Friday, all I can think about is the weekend and what it will bring. What will I do? Where will I go? What shall I see? I was born and raised here but I continue to view Maui as the best place on Earth and never grow tired of it regardless of it's laid back and "slow" reality. I've been to many places and have seen many things and each time that I return to Maui, I am home. I am relaxed and happy. ...

The Legend of the White Lady and others.

Sep. 20, 2007 (8412 views)

Ghost stories are everywhere. They are in Russia, South America, Europe-all over. Hawai'i is no exception. I was talking to one of my aunties yesterday and she mentioned she got "scared like she saw the white lady". I had to giggle. I thought to myself "hey what a great tidbit for would-be tourists!".There are few variations and I'm not quite sure how this came to be (perhaps a historian could verify) but supposedly if you are driving over a gulch, a white lady (ghost...

Grandparents Day

Sep. 11, 2007 (2109 views)

This past Sunday was Grandparents Day (September 9th). Did you honor your Grandparent(s)? I don't remember celebrating such a thing growing up, so I Googled it. It turns out Grandparents Day was started in 1978 with a proclamation by then President Jimmy Carter. The intent was to champion the cause for the lonely elderly in nursing homes (see grandparents-day.com for more info). It's a shame that we have to establish an official day to honor, much less remember, the elderly. Sure...
