    HISTORY AND ACCOLADES

The Kaanapali Classic was the first SENIOR PGA TOUR event ever played in Hawaii, and the latest in a series of "firsts" these fairways are famous for. Kaanapali introduced championship golf to Hawaii when the North Course opened in 1962 (with Bing Crosby on hand).

The next year, TV audiences watched a youthful Bob Charles win Shell's Wonderful World of Golf here, and the year after that, saw a pair of kings named Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus win the Canada Cup (now the World Cup), when that 34-nation competition played at Kaanapali. And when the LPGA's Women's Kemper Open first came to Hawaii, it was to the verdant fairways of Kaanapali.

The Tournament North Course is one of only two golf courses in all of Hawaii designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. The legendary architect took full advantage of the region's scenic natural beauty to create a course that is distinctive, demanding and appealing. Par 71, 6,994 yards, the North is typically Trent Jones, with large, contoured greens that place the emphasis on putting skill.

In February, 1997, the Kaanapali Resort South Course was named as one of North America's top 175 most "Women Friendly" courses by Golf For Women Magazine. In 1996, ten LPGA professionals competed in a Skins Game competition, with local pro Lori Planos matching superstar Dottie Pepper with two skins apiece.
